to the pharaohs until God decides to call upon Moses to lead His people out of slavery. There are numerous incidents and miracles in this Book all of which support the Hebrews journey. God brought down eleven plagues on the Pharaoh because he would not release the Hebrew slaves. The eleventh plague is on the firstborn when all firstborn sons of the Egyptians and even the firstborns of cattle will die (Exodus 11:5). God instructed the Israelites to each select a year-old male lamb with no defects that was a size the household could consume, to slay the lambs at twilight and to put some of the lambs blood on the sides and tops of their houses doorframes (Exodus 12:3-7). The blood identified the people as Israelites, Gods people. These houses would be passed over in the slaying of firstborns, thus, the day is identified as Passover. The escape path ordered by God took the people to the Red Sea, also known as the Sea of Reeds. When the people reached the Sea, they could see the Egyptians were chasing them. The people panicked because they thought they were trapped between drowning in the Sea or being captured or killed by the Egyptians but God commanded Moses to raise his staff and stretch out his arms and the Sea parted, allowing all the Israelites to get to the other side at which time the sea walls fell and the Egyptians were drowned. Another protection God gave the people at that point was an angel who was traveling with them. The angel went behind the Israelites and created a cloud to block the light from the Egyptians (Exodus 14). Gods protection of the Israelites supports the promise that He is making a nation of them.
