due to immigration from Asian, European and South American countries. Like other countries, Most of the influx is attributed to the passage of NAFTA and GATT and the subsequent
opportunities available in the telecommunications and computer industries. (Daly and Daglish 26(3)). As a result, many changes have been taking place in Canada, not the least of which
is its newspaper industry. Canadas newspaper industry is vast, if not large, and operating mostly out of Toronto. There are over
a hundred newspapers in the country, but the largest daily only has a circulation of 300,000 (Canada Newspaper Assoc.). Although this is a good (not excellent) circulation for total
population in Canada, it is small compared to other countries, and represents why larger newspaper companies have remained uninterested in takeovers in Canada.
Recent trends (1990s) have been to consolidate the newspapers in order to maintain their "autonomy." "Autonomy" refers to keeping the industry owned by Canadians. (Champion, "All For One,"
18). After a flurry of buys and sells over the last four years, and mixing of print media with multimedia, the industry saved itself by consolidating its unions under
