we have today. With right-wingers, big business and others who want to turn back the clock to 1910 coming on strong, its both instructive and distressing to see what might have been. This paper is a brief biography of Tony Mazzocchi and his passion for labor. Discussion Les Leopold wrote a biography of Mazzocchi entitled The man who hated work and loved labor; among those who wrote about the book are Ralph Nader, Bruce Springsteen, Barbara Ehrenreich and the late Howard Zinn. Nader called Mazzocchi "the greatest labor leader of our generation"; Springsteen noted that "Tony Mazzocchi spent his life fighting to protect workers like those who lost their jobs in my hometown and all over the country"; Ehrenreich, author of such works as Nickel and Dimed, and a tireless crusader for human rights, wrote that he was a "friend and inspiration" to her; and Howard Zinn calls Mazzocchi "one of the unsung, unnoticed heroes of the American working class" (The man who hated work and loved labor). It should be noted that these people are all or mostly all liberals (whatever that means these days); mostly they are noted for championing the rights of the individual as opposed to Corporate America, an increasingly difficult task. Tony Mazzocchi has been fighting that battle for years. Mazzocchi served in three different campaigns in World War Two, and after the war worked as an "auto worker, steelworker and in the construction trades" (Labor party, 2006). He served as president of the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers International Union (OCAW) from 1953 to 1965, and during that period "won a number of firsts, including the first dental insurance program in private industry" (Labor party, 2006).
