This paper examines the story and explains the conflict of resistance to violence that occurs within it. Discussion The phrase "conflict of resistance to violence" is odd and cumbersome. In order to discuss it we have to assign it a meaning. Lets assume that here it means there is a conflict between resisting the urge to do violence, and participating in violent acts. Does that work? Yes, it makes sense in the context of the story. The tale begins as Ivan Vasilievich tells his friends about his belief that the ability to understand what is good and what is evil is a matter of chance; and he illustrates his thinking with the example that gives the story its name (Tolstoy). Vasilievich and the others were discussing whether or not it is possible for men to improve their character if the conditions under which they live do not change, and although "[N]obody had actually said that one could not of oneself understand good and evil," Vasilievich chose to make his point by telling of an incident in his own life when he saw both clearly. He goes back 32 years to the night he danced most of the evening with Varinka, and fell hopelessly in love with her. Tolstoy describes both the physical setting and the Vasilievichs thoughts and emotions with exquisite clarity, though he doesnt tell us what Varinka is thinking; after all, this is from Ivans perspective. And from his viewpoint, he had found a beautiful, charming girl who completely captivated him (Tolstoy). He danced with her as often as he could, and by the time the ball ended, in the early morning, he was convinced he was in love with her: "We did not speak of love.
