If we consider the incidence in terms of demographics, we may start to get some ideas of patterns and the reasons why it may be continue and who may be at greatest risk and why, from a sociological perspective. One theme that can be considered is that of crime and deviance. If we start by looking at tobacco use in New Zealand there are some interesting trends. There is a smokers rate in 1999 for those over age 15 of 26%, in terms of gender this females show a 22% incidence and males a 26% incidence. However, for the age group 15 - 24 there are higher proportions of smokers, 30% of females and 27% of males (WHO, 2000). If we want to apply a sociological theory to this we may start looking towards the delinquent subculture theories of Cohen (1950) and Cloward and Ohlin (1960 (quoted Bilton et al, 2000). In this theory the criminals were social actors, and products of the society around them, and as such we may argue that those who smoke at this early age are also products of the society around themselves. If this is true we would also expect to find those in more marginalised social categories displaying a higher level of what are seen as anti social habits. If this is transferable to the use of tobacco and drinking we would also expect to find that it is most prominent in young males, with a working class background and lower incomes, as this is where the deviant subculture theory expects to find the highest levels of crime.
