This 5 page report discusses tinea capitis, most commonly known as “ringworm.” The predominant organism, Trichophyton tonsurans, can produce a variety of scalp findings, ranging from mild pruritus (itching) to obvious and severe alopecia (hair loss). Approximately three to eight percent of American children are affected, and up to one third of in-house contacts are asymptomatic carriers. The condition is relatively uncommon after puberty.
