impact on history. Discussion The U.S. almost always has some sort of war, police action, intervention, advisory group, mission, "exploration" or other military activity going on. There is a wide field of conflict to choose from, in other words. But it seems most logical to choose those wars that are easily researched and had a far-reaching impact, either on the whole world or on U.S. society or both. Lets take the two world wars, and Vietnam. The First World War was the "war to end war," a philosophy that obviously didnt work out. WWI was confined to Europe, with most of the struggle taking place on French soil; the names of some of the battles are part of human history forever: Verdun, the Somme, Passchendaele and Ypres, for example. American involvement in the war was minimal (April 1917-November 1918) and came at the end, after the conflict had been ranging for three years (Chronology of First World War). But the United States brought such superior amounts of men and material to the conflict that once it entered, it was only a question of time before it ended. World War I saw the introduction and use of weapons that had never been seen before; one was so horrendous it has been forever banned and the other so useful it is still in production. The first is gas, the second, the tank. Gas attacks were so deadly and debilitating that the use of gas in warfare was banned in 1925 by a Geneva Protocol (Weapons of war: poison gas, 2002); but the tanks were so effective that they are still used. Overall, the conflict was so costly and the trench warfare so horrifying that nations decided such a thing could never be allowed to happen again. Among the things that changed ...
