Fowlers Stages of Faith : The Psychology of Human Development and the Quest for Meaning addresses humanitys inherent desire to associate ones existence with some semblance of meaning. Whether this meaning is truth and beauty, comfort and happiness or any other pertinent combination, the author contends that each person harbors the hope of making sense out of life with the help of establishing significance to it. "We do not live by bread alone, sex alone, success alone, and certainly not by instinct alone. We require meaning. We need purpose and priorities; we must have some grasp on the big picture" (Fowler, 1995). In essence, Fowlers (1995) message of the pursuit for self-awareness and wholeness is based upon a foundation of perceptions comprised of individual struggles. Bandura (1986) contended the fundamental basis of human behavior is brought about by a core, causal self or agent, in which "self-generated activities lie at the very heart of causal processes" (Bandura, 1986). His observational learning theory is based upon the notion that people learn by taking example from others who represent a sense of importance, such as parental figures, friends or teachers. This form of imitation serves as a model for establishing values and beliefs that ultimately comprise an individuals personality. Banduras theory is called a cognitive social learning theory for the reason that it emphasizes the notion of learned expectations turning back to influence the environment. Closely associated with self-efficacy, Banduras (1986) cognitive social learning theory is instrumental in establishing the relationship that exists of ones ultimate success as an individual entity. ...
