The venomous blue ring octopus, or Hapalochlaena lunulatus/ Hapalochlaena maculata, is found on the Great Barrier
Reef of Australia, and off the Indonesian coast, and is one of the most poisonous sea creatures in existence. It is one of the smaller octopi, and has a life
span of one and a half to two years. It gets its common name from the distinctive blue rings on its body and arms; however, when the octopus is resting
its colour is pale, and the blue rings only become more pronounced and clearly visible when it is preparing to attack, which acts as a warning to other creatures. However,
the darker colouration generally immediately precedes the attack, so it is not a great deal of help where humans are concerned, since by the time the rings have been noticed
the creature is already on the attack. It is not
a particularly aggressive creature, and tends to use camouflage to conceal itself rather than setting out to attack other creatures, except for those which it hunts for food. It is
