This organized crime group as described has also been blamed for business debacles and political failings. This group is known as the Yakuza. The Yakuza has been in Japan for centuries but it was only recently that people began to examine the ramifications of its illegal businesses on the economy. The bad loans to emanate from the Yakuza as well as its role in business and politics have prompted some to take notice. How far into the pockets of the Japanese people are the Yakuza? The answer is illusive. On one side, the crime that goes on is not much different from that of other cities around the world. It is true that the Yakuza seem to monopolize much of life in Japan, but that is perhaps a western perception. Is the Yakuza all that prevalent? What is the groups role in Japan today? II. The Yakuza: History and Structure of the Organization The Yakuza may be traced all the way back to 1612, ("History, 2001). Then, these criminals were known as kabuki-mono which translated means "crazy ones" (2001) and the name evolved from there. They wore unusual clothing and their haircuts were also odd (2001). They carried long swords, which were quite obvious, and they had a habit of antagonizing people and hurting others for sheer pleasure (2001). From this unusual bunch, the Yakuza was born. The early Yakuza did not actually emerge until the middle to the latter part of the eighteenth century ("The Web," 2001).
