While using simple language, dedicated writers must be able to catch the attention of children, something not easy in todays high technology world. In fact, it is hard to find good childrens books in this day and age and while Dr. Seuss was a legend, and a wonderfully creative sort, many who have followed had not been so lucky or so clever. Yet, there are good writers who love the genre and one of them is Bill Martin Jr. Martin is a popular author who has written countless books over the years. In a childrens videotape, the author is depicted enthusiastically reading from one of his books called The Ghost-Eye Tree (Beauregard, 1996). As the camera would pan, it captured the books scary pictures (1996). Yet, Martin does not need to use gratuitous fright in order to draw his readers in. He often does this with words alone and he does this quite succinctly and honestly in The Ghost-Eye Tree. In the childrens video noted, the author is shown in his home, and he reflects on his midwestern childhood (1996). Martins childhood is actually rather ordinary but he grew up to be a creative writer and many aspiring childrens books writers wonder how he does it. In other words, it is rather unique when someone is successful at something that so many fail at. What is Bill Martins secret?
