With workplace technology evolving at an inconceivable rate, traditional assumptions about the office and the way that we work are rapidly changing. While this radical remote office environment creates a realm of possibilities for an employment relationship, it also raises some interesting/ controversial issues that will challenge conventional interpretations of federal labor and employment statutes (Advocates for Remote Employment and the Virtual Office, 2001 and Igbaria, 1998). Remarkably, a virtual office is a feasible alternative work model for many traditional office-type occupations, and it opens the door to realms of possibilities that were never-before thought to be expedient at this grand a scale. However, cyber-commuting will be a drastic change for many people that are used to working in a traditional office, and it is definitely not appropriate for everyone. Virtual workers must be self-disciplined and able to work without constant supervision. Lack of social interaction will deter some potential cyber-commuters. Hence, if meetings at the water-cooler or going out to lunch with office chums are high on ones list of job positives then this kind of work is definitely not an alternative. However, other employees will thrive in a virtual office environment without all of the conventional/ environmental distractions usually present in more traditional offices. Moreover, by eliminating the time and stress of commuting to and from the office, virtual workers should be able to increase productivity as well as devote more time and energy to other aspects of their lives.
