Protestant religions (Pearson 3). In Christianity, the second most-often repeated prayer, after the Lords Prayer, is the Ave Maria. Within the text of that prayer, Mary is described as full of grace and blessed and certainly this is way in which she is perceived by millions. She is the symbol of loyalty, of humility, and of obedience. She is also a symbol of discipleship. Little is written in the Bible about Mary. The Book of Isaiah includes a prophesy about her: "a virgin would conceive and give birth to a son, and would call his name Emmanuel, which means God-with-us" (NIV) and according to the Gospel of Luke, the Archangel Gabriel appeared to Mary and told her she would be "overshadowed by the Holy Spirit" and she would have a son whom she was to name Jesus (NIV Luke 1:28-38). Jesus birth to Mary is reported in the Gospels. Also reported in the Gospels is the fact that she was present at the crucifixion and then prayed with the Apostles in the Upper Room. While on the cross, Jesus said, "Behold, your mother!" which is interpreted, at least by the Roman Catholic Church, to mean that His disciples should develop a trust and love for Mary, to recognize her as their mother and the mother of all believers in Him (Neubert 1). Mary was present at the beginning of the Church as reflected in Acts and is thus an integral part of it. This is another reason the Catholic Church holds her in such an exalted position (Beach 1).
