It was a painkiller that helped many people who did not respond to other medications. In fact, at the time, so many people were reporting wonderful results with this new drug, doctors began to write prescription after prescription. After all, it was a drug that actually worked. However, thins would take a turn for the worse. What happened was that people were beginning to experience heart attacks and other negative reactions that would eventually cause its withdrawal from the market. Of course, the beginning of the story would start without incident. Vioxx was approved by the FDA on May 20, 1999 to treat acute pain as well as for osteoarthritis (Thomas, 2006). By March of 2000, the companys research would show that more than expected cardiovascular problems would arise in patients taking the new drug (Thomas, 2006). In early 2001, the FDA became quite concerned about this find but Merck continued to market the product as it always had (Thomas, 2006). Merck soon received a warning from the FDA, claiming that their advertisements towards physicians was misleading and then, in April of 2002, Merck had to slap a warning label on the box (Thomas, 2006). It seemed as if the warning label was ignored, much like people ignore the warnings on cigarette packages. They were used to FDA warnings, but they were not used to seeing deadly results from ignoring the advice.
