of the most fierce warriors of history. They are remembered not only for their ferocity, however, but also for their exceptional nautical and shipbuilding skills. Their ships were among the finest in the world. Elaborately carved and painted and adorned with the stereotypical bowpiece and a row of painted shields hanging down each side, the beauty of these ships as well as their functionality distinguished them. Utilizing these ships and their mariner skills, the Vikings became frequent visitors to Europe and the British Isles between the ninth and tenth centuries. They are credited as well with having sailed all the way to North America and Greenland using not only the power of the wind but also the power of oarsmen who were seated one behind the other along the entire length of the ships on each side with their oars protruding through the sides (Newsweek, 2000). It is said that their "economic network stretched from todays Iraq all the way to the Canadian Arctic". The Vikings ventured from their own kingdoms in Norway, Denmark, and Sweden not only to escape its overpopulation and political strife but to procure trade goods and to fulfill their desire for adventure. Everywhere the ventured they took along their religion and other lifeways. They are not remembered pleasantly by much of history. An article in "Time" describes them as: "ravagers, despoilers, pagans, and heathens" (Time, 2000).
