study, entitled Using Instructional Technology in Transformed Learning Environments: An Evaluation of Project Child, demonstrates the use of technology as an integrated tool that can serve to improve academic performance and classroom behaviors. In transformed classrooms under Project CHILD (Computers Helping Instruction and Learning Development), "a K--5 instructional model that transforms the traditional grade-specific, self-contained elementary classroom into a three-classroom cross-grade cluster," Butzin (2001) argues that computer-based instructional systems in reading, writing and mathematics can be beneficial for the learner population. Not only do outcomes from technology relate to potential improvements in student academic performance, but they can also support behavioral improvements within the structure of Project CHILD. Sample The sample for this study includes populations from two Miami-Dade County, Florida, schools, one Project CHILD (PC) school and one non-PC school. The population of students assessed were elementary school fifth graders. In one school, children participated in classrooms restructured under Project CHILD, with students experiencing accommodations in the classroom that include the use of instructional clusters that are technology-based. The other school population used traditional grade-specific educational models (Butzin, 2001). Independent and Dependent Measures The dependent measure was participation in the PC program as opposed to non-participation. The independent variables for this study were the outcomes of student performance relative to standardized testing conducted for 5th grade students. Control for external variables were demonstrated through the use of schools in a similar demographic/geographic region. Methods/Results The methods utilized in this study were experimental and the results were calculated through a t-test structure.
