orientation under which the counseling is administered determines nearly every aspect of the counseling, and therefore essentially defines a practice. Understanding the approach employed is vital when assessing the
counselor, as this methodology drives the entire content of the therapy. A newcomer in terms of theoretical orientation in family counseling is the solution-based therapy approach, and the one
which I would choose if I were a family counselor. There are many people in this world searching for
fulfillment, and nowhere is this search more evident than when people unite in a family unit (Philosophy Versus Therapy, 2003). However, the failing of many traditional therapies, according to
some experts, is that since little personal effort is involved they do little to respond to mans discontent (Philosophy Versus Therapy, 2003, See also OHanlon and Hudson). Therefore, since
responsibility is yielded to someone else, the therapeutic situation is inherently flawed (Philosophy Versus Therapy, 2003). Furthermore, traditional therapies are inherently based upon the assumption of individual lacking.
Traditional models of therapy, based on modernist assumptions, embrace a position of certainty in that there is a model of normalcy,
to which the therapist then compares the person/family in therapy. In so doing, s/he focuses on how different the family is from the norm, i.e. deficit focus, and decides which
interventions are needed to bring the family closer to the norm (Atwood, 2003). While many
others disagree with this analysis, in fact solution-based therapy indeed addresses the issue of personal involvement and personal responsibility, which is likely its most attractive feature (Philosophy Versus Therapy, 2003,
