The critiques of the euro sceptics argue that the many opportunities presented have been wasted, whilst the sceptic argue that integration has involve the abdication of too much power, placing national interests in the hands of an international body where the UK is a minority interest. There is little to contradict the way the UK has sought to bridge the difference, but even in this there has been a cost, without committing to either of the above paradigms the result has been ambiguously and a weak position. To examine this we need to look at how the UK has participated in Europe allowing or resisting different forms of integration and assessing if these have been choices made wisely. To assess if this has been undertaken wisely we have to define what is meant by wise. Wise usually means having and using knowledge. However, in this context there needs to be a perspective. At this is from the perspective of the UK we will assume that wisely will mean managing the integration of the UK within the EU, or EEC, in order to maximise the potential benefits without creating unacceptable cost to other members or none members. The UK joined the Common Market in 1973. The political background at the time was support for the common market membership from the conservative government and opposition from the labour government, a partial reverse of the current situation.
