Introduction In a hypothetical example, a group of human services workers are planning to work with people from Mongolia, and due to their limited experience with people of this background, would like some information on cultural variables. A student writing a paper to inform such workers about the people of Mongolia should keep in mind that they are relaying information so that the workers will make no faux pas, or get into uncomfortable situations, due to cultural differences. This happens a lot. On an old Seinfeld episode for example, one of the American characters had a cold and his hands were dirty. He refused to shake the hand of an Asian business associate. Due to the language barrier, the refusal could not be properly explained and the business was lost as the Asian businessman was highly insulted. That is just one example as to why it is important to understand differences in cultural backgrounds, particularly as it pertains to customs and how relationships are looked at. Understanding gender roles, family life and relationships, as well as religious and ethnic variables, is important. While that is true, one may also observe that gender roles are unique in Mongolia. One would expect that females are highly valued in the society as there is equality. In many ways, one would surmise that because western civilization gives lip service to gender equality, that they will get along well ...
