United States of America did lock away some Japanese people during the wartime and put Japanese Americans into internment camps. Of course, while they have been angry ever since, what occurred was really just a negation of rights in the nation. There was no torture there like what happened in Nazi Germany or in the POW camps of Japan. In fact, many people are not aware of what happened to the POWs during wartime. The Nazis and how they killed and tortured the Jews is apparent to all, but the Japanese maltreatment of American POWs is hidden. Of course, there is peace with Japan now. Still, their treatment of prisoners was not unlike that of how Saddam Hussein treats his people or how the Nazis treated the Jews. Of course, it was before the Geneva Convention. Still, the treatment was so inhumane, so torturous that it questions notions of humanity. How can anyone be so cruel? In looking at the torture that ensued, there is little dispute that it all happened as explained. There are so many accounts of these unspeakable acts that it is hard to say it did not happen. It did. Yet, it is a world that tries to forgive and forget. It does however help to explore what happened in those camps in Japan during World War II. Although by and large most accounts of torture go to Japanese influence, Michno does give the U.S. some culpability. Why? He claims that while the U.S. wanted to get the POWs out, they would put the mission first; in other words, if they had to sink a ship with POWs aboard, they did not hesitatei.
