As is the case with any powerful culture there is clearly not just one element that led to their success, but rather a combination of many elements that brought about
the power and success. But, if one were to choose only one element of the Roman Empire that led to its success one could well argue that roads were the
element that truly brought success to Rome, allowing Rome to spread its power and allowing others to want to be a part of Rome. The following paper examines this perspective.
The Success of the Romans As noted, while many elements go into the success of a culture or an empire, in the case of Rome the roads were
clearly the major player. This is because roads enabled Rome to truly spread its power, its vision, its army, its ability to communicate, and its lure for other cultures. The
roads created by the Romans opened the world for Rome and opened Rome for the rest of the known world at the time. In looking at a primary source
and the power of roads BBC notes the following: "The Romans built their roads and bridges so that their military could travel faster than when they did when they went
over rough terrain. Also, with a such a large empire, they needed a very orderly system of travel with connected paths to ensure that soldiers wouldnt get stuck between two
villages where a road or bridge had been washed out. Roman messengers also had to be able to travel swiftly from anywhere to Rome to get orders for the military
