The Russian Orthodox Church played a central role in the development of society and culture in Kievan Rus and Muscovy alike. Not only can Christian faith but also
literacy and the written alphabet can be attributed to Church influence. As a Stanford University (2003) web site observes:
"Once the oral language of the Slavs found a graphic form, the possibility of expression went beyond the body and entered the realm of the
letter". Indeed, the introduction of the written alphabet alone was one of the major
accomplishments of the Russian Orthodox Church. Prior to the arrival of the Orthodox Church to the region we now know as Russia Slavic tribes lived a relatively primitive life.
By the eighth century A.D. the easternmost confines of the Slavic population had consolidated into three distinct groupings, the Russians, the Ukranians, and the Belorussians and their governments had
evolved into city-states whose economies were characterized by extensive trade networks. With that evolution, however, came a greater liability. Of particular concern was the Viking marauders and Asian
nomads and even factions of the people themselves who sought to exploit the trade networks for their own profit (Roberts, 1991). Thus entered the Varangian Vikings. Roberts (1991)
notes the controversy surrounding the question: "Whether the Varangians were invited by the Slav merchants
to come rule and reign over us, as related in the ancient chronicles, or whether they forcefully appropriated a profitable commercial structure"
