The persecution reached its height in Nazi Germany, when over a million Roma died in the death camps. This paper discusses two books about the Roma, Bury Me Standing by Isabel Fonseca; and A False Dawn: my life as a Gypsy Woman in Slovakia by Ilona Lackova. Discussion Isabel Fonsecas book Bury Me Standing is a well-researched and crafted book about the Gypsies (who call themselves the Roma), a people who have been, and are still being, persecuted around the world. Some of this has to do with the fact that much of what gadje (non-Roma) know about the Roma comes from movies, legends and second-hand accounts, and some from the fact that the Roma tend to keep to themselves. In order to learn about this unique people, Fonseca, who is an American, spent four years living with and learning about the Roma, and traveling much of Eastern Europe with them to appreciate their culture (Maslin, 1995). She finds herself "in the bosom of an Albanian gypsy family she describes in intricate detail," and she "draws upon poets, itinerants, self-promoting Gypsy kings and forward-looking political leaders ... to piece together this captivating portrait (Maslin, 1995). What Fonseca discovered is a "people on the brink," tired of being marginalized and stereotyped, and just beginning to understand that they have a collective identity (Maslin, 1995). The Roma desire to integrate into modern society is not going to be easy to accomplish, since it means letting go of the past for a future which most Roma regard with ambivalence; these people are nomadic, and they will be asked to settle down and conform to the "rules" of the 21st century.
