It helps to explain why certain races do have particular characteristics such as differences in eye shape or the size of the nose bridge. At the same time, science to some extent has been used against those who belong to minority race categories. For example, the polygenic theory came forth in America, and in part, had been used to support slavery as it saw the Negro as inferior (Popkin 205). So much in the United States goes to race, from ones social identity to ones political and economic voice. Sociologists and demographers look at race as a factor in explaining everything and in general, one can look at things that go on in the world and see what W.E.B. DuBois called the color line. And while it seems that everything is categorized in terms of race, analyzed in terms of race and judicially decided upon in terms of race, some ask whether or not the concept of race is valid at all. While that is a good point, others might consider such a statement ludicrous. After all, everyone has grown up with affirmative action, learning about the horrors of slavery and understanding racial identity. They have noticed black neighborhoods and white flight and that there is a difference in attitude in certain neighborhoods. Most believe that they can just tell the race of a person by looking, so how can one say that race is not real?
