The role of Israel in Jewish identity is hotly debated in a number of circles. This question cannot be addressed, in fact, without considering a wide diversity of viewpoints formulated in response to a long history of turmoil in the area. The issues broiling in Palestine, for example, are ones which spawn severely separated viewpoints. Jews, of course, insist on the importance of Israel in their identity. While many condemn the actions of the Palestinians, others perceive Palestinians as being justified in the actions they have taken to rid the region of Israel and its Jewish inhabitants. Those who take this stance insist that Palestine, after all, dates back to Biblical times. These Palestinian proponents declare that the Jews who insist on the creation of Israel really have no more standing in this region than immigrants. There are, however, certain observations which must be made in deciding whether to accept this argument. Indeed, a review of all the facts surrounding the Palestinian/Israeli conflict allows the realization that a compromise in this position is necessitated. The quest for peace in the Middle East has been the focus of world attention for generations. From a Palestinian perspective, however, this goal is simply unobtainable. Indeed, the impracticality of peace in the Middle East is demonstrated over and over again in history. The history of the region is one of violence and social strife, a history which is replete with conflict between religions and cultures. Unfortunately, these same frictions continue to exist today and they will continue to exist well into the future. Palestinian resistance is a reflection of this friction.
