Educational quality varies with a number of factors. One of the most obvious of these is funding. Funding is determined by a large degree by the tax base of a particular school system. It is critical in such aspects of education as teacher salaries and per pupil spending. While each of these factors can interrelate with educational success, however, they are not the only determinant of the success or failure of a system. As will be seen in this brief comparison of the approaches of several states to education, educational success is determined by a number of very diverse factors. Nature of the Problem Schools across the nation are failing miserably in their charge to educate our young people. This decline is evident when reviewing nationalized test scores but also just in relying on the knowledge base individual instructors have developed over the years. Many point the finger at poor funding. Others, claim our educational failure is the result of too much political maneuvering in the school system. In the United States we as citizens, however, have come to look to issues such as job security to justify our continued path in a system we know is failing. The expectation that the school system is a political arena is one which has resulted in a school system which is far from satisfactory and one which is in dire need of change.
