He is blessed with a special gift that enables him to make money on horse races, and blessed with a special gift that consists of selflessness and humility. It is this selflessness and humility which ultimately destroys him, or perhaps saves him depending on ones point of view. The following paper examines the theme and symbolism of greed found in this story. Greed In Lawrences "Rocking-Horse Winner" we have a young boy, a boy who wants so badly to make things right in his house, a house that seems to scream that there is never enough. The truth, however, is that there is always more than enough. It is the mother who desires to have more and more and it is the young boy who falls victim to this desperation. The mother is not a very loving mother, and yet the boy is still loving and selfless when it comes to trying to do something for his family. The boy has a gift, a gift that allows him to see the future of horse races. He thus makes money by having someone bet on these races so that he can provide for his family. This selflessness costs him his life. And, it is the needless greed that is the culprit of death. This story could easily be seen as a story that preaches the evils of greed. It is greed which ultimately destroys the innocence and the luck of one boy. It is also the greed that destroys the so-called luck of the woman. While she is not unlucky, she has constantly told her son that luck is the most important thing in the world and she never sees her own luck. The truth is that she is ...
