Many view this issue as one of tension between Afro-Caribbean cultural perceptions of wage-based work and capitalist values and the material need to survive and propagate into the future. However, there are historical indications that means of production can be integrated into such societies in a culturally cohesive manner. One of the most obvious manifestations of such a practice is the manner in which Rastafari culture brought a marijuana-based economy to the Afro-centric limes of Trinidad, Tobago, and areas of the United States such as San Fernando. This paragraph helps the student introduce the text being analyzed throughout the rest of the paper. This phenomenon is exhaustively documented by academic Ansley Hamid in his text "The Ganja Complex". This book represents some two decades of research and considers the socio-cultural dimension, as well as the economic dimension, or the impact Rastafari and its marijuana economy had in Afro-Caribbean communities. The primary theme of the text is the use of marijuana as a cultural touchstone by which the Afro-centric limes could be utilized as a productive force for the distribution and sale of marijuana (Hamid, 2002). Importantly, this was a form of production and commerce that was compatible with the values of the liming community, and thusly served as a pre-capitalist means of production for such communities.
