Indeed, people are using online therapists in lieu of face to face talk therapy. In examining the phenomenon of e-therapy, there are many critics. After all, the "e-therapist" only knows a client by email. How much can really be accomplished? Yet, it is a new phenomenon and many people enjoy the convenience and privacy it offers. They can work 60 hours per week, then go home and write to their therapist at night. No appointment is necessary. What services are offered online to this end? In combing through the many sites, three will be examined. When arriving at the Headworks site, one is greeted with a myriad of free information about psychology and self-help. Towards the bottom, as well as near the top, is a link to learn about e-therapy. At Headworks, email therapy is offered. While offering online therapy the site provides a disclaimer: " E-therapy is not a universal substitute for face-to-face psychotherapy. Rather, it is an alternative therapeutic process that can help some (not all) people with some (not all) types of issues. In other words, comparing face-to-face psychotherapy and e-therapy is very much like comparing apples and oranges: theyre both good for you, but they arent the same" ("Headworks," 2005).
