Throughout the ages the prophet Muhammad has been viewed as a heretic and as evil by the Christians in the West. Christians have not been willing to accept him and do not believe him to be a prophet of the Islamic people. In fact, many fervently believe Muhammad to be the anti-Christ. In Clinton Bennetts book, In Search of Muhammad, he discusses how Western Christians viewed Muhammad from the seventh century to present day (Bennett, 1998). It is interesting to note that starting in the Middle Ages until the present, writings by Christians about Muhammad generally present Muhammad as an imposter and sometimes also denote that he is the anti-Christ (Bennett, 1998). This is not dissimilar to Southerns book on the same subject which is entitled, Western Views of Islam in the Middle Ages. Southern also expresses ideas about how the West reacted to Muhammad and reflects on the intellectual and theological ramifications of the introduction of the Islamic faith in the West (Southern, 1978). J.W. Sweetman is another writer who chronicled the views of the West in terms of Muhammad. He too sites much evidence in support of Bennetts premise and highlights the fact that in many ways the attitudes of this West toward Muhammad in the Middle Ages is much the same as the attitude of the West toward Muhammad (and Islam) in present day (Sweetman, 1955).
