Amos may have been a peasant economically but he was well-spoken with a firm grasp of language (Ritenbaugh, 2009; NIV Study Bible, 1995). The fact that he spent his life in rural areas made him alert to the evils he saw when he walked through city streets (Ritenbaugh, 2009). What the Israelites had come to view as normal, Amos perceived as wicked and against God (Ritenbaugh, 2009). God sent a very simple man, a Jew, to deliver His message of doom to the Israelites. This was the first of Gods messages Amos delivered. God must have seen Amos as very special, one who could handle delivering a stern message to His people. Hoseas messages from God focused on Gods love, mercy, and forgiveness but Amos messages from God were about Gods justice and righteousness (NIV Study Bible, 1995). A very different type of message. Amos says that he received the message from God in his home town of Tekoa. He saw what would happen to the people in both cities two years before the earthquake would strike (Amos 1:1). He would be telling the people that Israel would be exiled and Jeroboam would die by the sword (Amos 7:11). Amos explained who he was: "I was neither a prophet nor a prophets son, but I was a shepherd . . . But the Lord took me from tending the flock and said to me, God, prophesy to my people Israel" (Amos 7:14-15). We must consider that God could have chosen anyone to deliver these messages about social justice and His displeasure with His people but He chose Amos.
