A great number of the people who lived in the United States during the 1920's were the same people who had lived there during the Progressive Era, a period of change that took place from approximately 1900 to1920. Yet some historians have claimed that Progressive ideals were lost and that those same Americans demonstrated a self-centered intolerance during the 1920's. This paper will address the question of why some historians have such a negative and pessimistic opinion of people who lived during that time, as well as discuss the differences between America in the 1920's as compared to the Progressive Era.
