malnutrition are thought to be responsible for the deaths of 6 million children every year ("Millions of Children," 2006, p.12). Of course, hunger and malnutrition are two different things. The concept of hunger is usually equated with a physical sign that someone is in need of food. Of course, today, when discussing LDCs the term is used to denote a culture that lives where people are hungry and die because there is not enough food to go around. This is a persistent state. Many people find this unacceptable in a world that has plenty. In delving into the topic of malnutrition, the concept needs to be defined. What is malnutrition exactly? Malnutrition "is an imbalance or deficiency of nutrients. This can come from not eating enough healthy foods or by using up too many nutrients through activities. Malnutrition can be identified by using body weight, body fat, protein stores and laboratory values" ("Malnutrition," 2006). It should also be noted that the World Health Organization defines severe malnutrition more specifically as "<-3 Z weight-for-length and/or oedema" (Ashworth, Chopra, McCoy, Sanders et al., 2004, p.1110). Malnutrition exists in all countries. There are elderly people in the United States who sometimes do not have enough to eat. The clich?s are that they may have to choose between food or medicine, or that they eat cat food which is cheaper than regular food. While most people are not starving in the United States, there are some people who have difficulty making ends meet. The hunger problem is much more substantial in developing nations. Malnutrition is a problem in developing countries. It is a problem in LDCs because these nations have fewer resources than nations that are developed.
