Human existence relies on the existence of parents and as such they influence people in many ways. The following paper examines This Boys Life by Tobias Wolff and Into the Forest by Jean Hegland as it relates to the power of parents over a childs development, whether they be absent or present. The Presence/Absence of Parents: Wolff and Hegland In Wolffs novel one could well argue that the young man, who is Tobias Wolff, resents his father and his absence to such an extent that he does not generally appreciate his mother. This is perhaps the case with many young men for they want that male figure in their lives. It is a reality that has long been a part of many fictional stories as well. For example, in Homers classic The Odyssey there is the pursuit of the son to find his father, to know his father, who is Odysseus. It is also a theme that is reflected, from Homers work, in the story of Star Wars films for Luke was in search of answers concerning his father as well. This seems to be a perspective that Tobias knew and felt in real life, illustrating that there is a very strong connection between sons and fathers who do not know one another. In his growing up and developing a lot of his development involves his anger and frustration concerning the absence of his father.
