Von Huben 5/2010 Please Introduction Latin America has a great many natural resources, as well as countries of outstanding beauty where tourists come in great numbers. Given all this, it should be a wealthy region, but it remains mired in poverty. This paper attempts to explain why poverty persists in Latin America. Discussion Poverty is widespread in Latin America, though there has been some "slow small improvement in recent years" (Poverty in Latin America). Perhaps not surprisingly, the poorest people are the indigenous peasants, and "their extreme poverty is mainly due to unfair distribution of wealth" (Poverty in Latin America). Because redistribution of wealth is one of the basic tenets of Socialism, this may help to explain why so many elections in Latin America return a left-leaning candidate. This source goes on to explain how this unequal distribution has occurred. First, Latin America leans heavily on foreign investment, but draws most of its investors from North America, which gives less stable and shorter-term loans than those made available by European investors (Poverty in Latin America). These loans come with high interest rates, which makes repayment difficult for many governments in the region, which means there is no money left for social programs (Poverty in Latin America). Other causes of poverty in the region include migrations, the pressure a growing population puts on limited resources, internal conflicts and just plain bad government (Poverty in Latin America).
