the beginning of the twentieth, it became increasingly clear that the US government had to adapt to the needs of a new industrial age in order for the American way of life to survive in the new century. As the nineteenth century came to a close, the average American felt that both economic and political life were moving out of control (Foner; Garraty PG). The populace felt that the political arena was growing increasingly corrupt and that opportunities for leading a moral and satisfying life were decreasing. Where such sentiments in European countries, such as France, led to a series of revolutions, US history has been characterized by a series of movements, each hopeful of gradual reform, with the members ever mindful of founding ideals of the country (Mattson 337). Therefore, the concerns of the late nineteenth century led to the formulation of the Progressive movement. The main concerns of the Progressive Era involved the problems that had arisen from the enormous economic transformations that had accompanied the Industrial Revolution (Mattson 337). This led to a deep concern for American democracy, in general, and an increasing fear of corruption caused by special interests and money from the huge business trusts that formed during the 1890s (Mattson 337). The reformers tried to improve the status of direct democracy through such things as the social center movement and open public debate. However, the greatest impact that such activities had was in creating the impetus to strengthen the power of the federal government. This gave the political forces that favored controlling the power of corporate America the tools necessary for regulating that power (Mattson 337).
