one of Vassas other names, it is the story of many different experiences with slavery and throughout the text we see different examples of suffering in the experiences of slaves.
The following paper looks at just one chapter of his work, chapter V, and examines examples of suffering in the work. Suffering In the beginning of the chapter
Equiano illustrates that he believed at this one particular point in time, when his condition and his environment had changed, he hoped that all his suffering would have ended. However,
he states otherwise: "I plunged, as I supposed, in a new slavery; in comparison of which all my service hitherto had been perfect freedom; and whose horrors, always present to
my mind, now rushed on it with tenfold aggravation" (Equiano 180-181). He indicates that he wept quite bitterly and thought he had displeased God and was thus being punished
(Equiano). In this we see a suffering that involves not only his physical position, but also his social and his spiritual position.
He clearly felt that his suffering was of how own making, while we, as the readers, know full well none of it was his doing but rather the doing of
slavery. As such the suffering we see is very complex and all encompassing as he realizes his new position was worse than any he had obviously experienced before.
He tells of a kind of hope he once had in relationship to a woman who was previously intimate with his master. She was
a woman who argued she would take him away with her quite often, giving him hope. "[B]ut, unfortunately for me, a disagreement soon afterwards took place between them; and she
