He had done many things and contributed a great deal of society. The book entitled Gandhi, Great Soul, is of course a work of non-fiction, but it has a setting nonetheless. Place is very important in comprehending this book. In fact, when examining this work that focuses on the life of one individual, there is a sense of history, not only in respect to what Gandhi contributed to society, but also in a very general way. When delving into the background of Gandhi, as does Severance (1997), it is important to understand that the times in which he was raised had much to do with his life works. Brown (1989) writes: "Gandhi was a man whose concerns were timeless. But his career was rooted in and molded by the context of a specific time and place. Some familiarity with India in the late nineteenth century is essential to understanding Gandhis development, and also how extremely unlike it was that this nonentity should have come eventually to national and international prominence" (p. 8). Gandhis influence was significant and lingers to this day. Gandhi lived in India and helped the people resist British domination (Severance, 1997). Britain had controlled India for some time. Hence, in reading this work, there is a sense of history as it respects India and what it had been involved with as far as the British are concerned.
