The development of collective bargaining, at the center of union activity, has been a recognizable element in supporting unionization, but questions have been raised about the nature of the union in the current labor movement as a result of global development, the expansion of many companies, and the progression of the workforce towards one based in high technology. Understanding the principles of collective bargaining and recent legal developments regarding labor is central to the views on the labor movement of the 21st century. The concept of collective bargaining is based in the belief that the voices of a collective can better maintain discourse on individual rights than if each person speaks out along. The issues that have long been considered elemental parts of union discourse with management have included things like wages, wage increases, working conditions, gender-based issues and benefits packages. At the same time, the underlying broader elements of discourse have ranged from legalities surrounding segments of employment to working conditions and the safety of American workers. Unions have been effective in providing a means for discourse on these subjects and it was clear that the defining directive for unions is based in the call for a way of safeguarding the livelihood of the workers.
