the process of publishing and distributing and even having his book reviewed the chances that technology was involved are very high. Mr. Postman believes that a wise man must begin
any critique with an acknowledgment of the successes. The fact that he has books published, has audio cassettes for sale and is able to travel to meet his speaking obligations
lends dissent to the credibility of his critiques of modern technological advances. The age of the printing press has become the age of the computer, from gunpowder to talcum if
that is the metaphor you prefer, and the ability of the written word to use language as an instrument of ideology has not been lost or subdued as Mr. Postman
implies. It may be true that technology, specifically computers and television, have re-defined the concepts of freedom , truth, intelligence. fact, wisdom, memory and history as asserted in this essay
but by opening the world to accessible information in an ultimately timely manner it has also redefined stagnation, diversity, availability and community. In societys quest to eliminate information scarcity it
has opened a Pandoras Box of possibilities. There is not a syllabus for the courses Mr. Postman teaches available on the Internet. There are whole Universities available. Cyber-libraries and
