It is particularly noteworthy since China is the only Buddhist country that had a highly-developed civilization of its own before the introduction of Buddhism. That is the primary reason
that Far Eastern Buddhism is the most unique of the "versions" of the faith to develop outside India. No other non-Indian society assimilated Buddhism so thoroughly or added so
much of its own wisdom and practice as the Chinese. For more than a thousand years, the religious life of the Chinese
was dominated by Buddhism. That thousand-year period resulted in a remarkable amount of established and ingrained devotion through both sacred art and great literature. Throughout the entrenchment and
evolution of Buddhism in China, the faith remained true to its Indian origin but became increasingly more Chinese in its application and intent. However, like all religions or other
cultural institutions and standards, Buddhism in China flourished and declined, reached status quo and then went through yet another metamorphisis. The uniqueness
of Buddhism in China was due, in part, to the widely different culture of China to India. Aspects of the belief system developed and matured according to the
people embracing it. Ironically, as the two cultures and the two traditions worked to reach a level of harmony in belief, Buddhism flourished. But when that harmony was
actually reached, the faith lost some of its dynamic interest. For the most part, Chinese Buddhists have not made significant interpretive changes from the model presented within Indian Buddhism.
