an organizations structure is to a large extent attributable to those in power having chosen one that is most advantageous to them, and will enhance their control. In fact, when one looks at organizational management, one can see that corporate structures indeed enhance the roles of those who have the power to create them. It simply makes sense as everyone acts in his or her own best interest, particularly in the corporate world. And while it may seem obvious, it is also a concept that is largely swept under the rug. After all, if people admit that their corporations are based on a structure conducive to help those who started it, and forget the rest, there will be a revolution in the business world. The masses-or the larger numbers of employees-will begin to protest. After all, they are generally led to believe that they do have the opportunity for advancement. Yet, while the concept is something obvious and illusive at the same time, there are numerous examples of this. Many businesses do reward those at the top, and although a few innovative companies preach rewarding those at the lowest levels-including the janitorial staff-the truth is that such structures still help its creators a great deal more than others that come on board later, or at the lower levels of the organization. Some concepts are important here. The concepts of structure and agency can help one to understand what is involved in producing sociological explanations for the problem at hand. Although these concepts are generally applicable to social institutions, they shed light on the power relationship and seem to pertain nicely to any type of organization.
