Some basic steel manufacturing of the frame and body, a little and very basic electrical work and then a lot of labor intensive hands-on work consisted the breakthrough technology of the assembly line that created the first automobiles. Nearly a century later, the hands-on approach to auto manufacturing has been greatly decreased. Presently, computer-based technology dominates all facets of automobile manufacturing, from the initial design, to the assembly and even to the interaction with the driver. Today, even the most inexpensive automobiles on the market, the cars that the industry touts as Ford did as being affordable for almost anyone, are a product far removed from the supposed equivalently affordable Model-T. The automobile industry has all but replaced the design engineers paper and pencil and the assembly lines muscle and sweat of Fords day with the computer, software and computerized robots. It can be argued that the effects of this increase in technology are ultimately both positive and negative. For example, while computerized machines are replacing human beings and eliminating jobs, they are also producing a higher quality of automobile that are more skillfully designed, better built and most importantly safer, all as a result of the vast applications in the automobile industry of computer technology. Essentially, the history of the automobile industry begins with the assembly line. The manufacture of the automobile utilizing Henry Fords groundbreaking concept undoubtedly laid the framework for how cars would be built even to this day.
