form another attack might take continues to grow. This paper considers the impact of bioterrorism on health care; how we can prevent bioterrorism; and the role of the nurse in bioterrorism. Discussion Role of the nurse: There are a great many articles that discuss fears of bioterrorism; one that addresses the role of the nurse deals with how nurses will fit into the picture if an attack occurs. The fact that hospitals and schools all over the country are now including courses dealing with the effects of bioterrorism in their curricula speaks to both the fear of attack and the need for preparedness. In addition to being able to diagnose and manage people who might be infected with biological organisms introduced through an attack, nurses have several other issues to address (Miller-Boyle, 2006). First, nurses who work in ER departments, in home care settings, and at patients bedsides, or who are in "primary or specialty care clinics" will probably be responsible for the recognition of the first symptoms of illness caused by an attack (Miller-Boyle, 2006, p. 6). Many bioterrorism agents, such as anthrax, are found in nature, but they may be modified to "increase their ability to cause disease, make them resistant to current medicines, or to increase their ability to be spread into the environment" (Miller-Boyle, 2006, p. 6). Miller-Boyle writes that such an attack would probably begin with the release of some sort of agent into an unsuspecting community, which means that nurses would probably be the first health care workers to encounter those who have been infected; this means that the nurses "should be knowledgeable regarding signs and symptoms as well as patient history and circumstances that could lead to the suspicion and more rapid diagnosis of bioterrorism infection" (Miller-Boyle, 2006, p. 6).
