is comprised of numerous distinct elements, each of which works in specific ways to fight against unwanted intrusions from the outside. Basically, the immune system as a whole works because of its ability to recognize the natural components of the body and those components that are unwanted intruders. This system is in fact characterized by a duality of sorts. It works on both a general and a specific level, for example. It works on both a natural and an adaptive level using either innate responses and recognitions or acquired responses and recognitions. It is both cell mediated and humoral, both active and passive and both primary and secondary. This is the duality of the immune system. The immune system is also systemic, in other words it works throughout the entire body not just at the point of infection. The immune system also has a memory. It can recognize elements that have caused it problems in the past and is prepared to act even more aggressively against those problems the second time around than the first. The bone marrow and thymus gland are the primary organs of the lymphoid system while the tonsils, adenoids, appendix, Peyers patches, spleen and lymph nodes are the secondary organs. To better understand the immune system, it is helpful to first define antigens and antibodies. Antigens are those agents that trigger the immune system response. Antigens are usually but not always proteins. They are specific to a particular disease. When they enter our body they become a foreign intruder and the body initiates a defense response in an attempt to eradicate them.
