It was the region of the world where writing and farming were first developed, the region where kingdoms and cities came into being and then empires (Amazingart.com). However, "most of what was built here has long since crumbled into ruin, leaving little but foundations for archaeologists to puzzle over" (Amazingart.com). Yet, still there remains one of the most astounding structures in the world, the ancient, or great, Ziggurat of Ur. The following paper examines this piece of history and architecture. The Great Ziggurat: The Ancient Ziggurat "The Ziggurat at Ur, a massive stepped pyramid about 210 by 150 feet in size, is the most well-preserved monument from the remote age of the Sumerians" (Amazingart.com). It is comprised of a series of platforms that are successively smaller, and made up of "a solid core of mud-brick covered by a thick skin of burnt-brick to protect it from the elements" (Amazingart.com). As it pertains to the corners of the ziggurat they are set up as compass points, much like the Parthenon, and the walls slope inward slightly, which apparently serves to give the image of solidity (Amazingart.com). Another author indicates the following in terms of its construction and design: "This ziggurat was erected to the moon god Nanna...It was composed of three stages. It is not clear whether there was a temple at the top. The remains of the ziggurat probably stood over an existing structure going back to the early dynastic period...Its outer faces are of baked brick, are inclined to a pronounced batter and have regularly spaced, flat buttresses. These outer faces encase the solid core of mudbricks" (Archimedia). ...
