expectations for the future indeed need to be reviewed as this country faces a true crisis in terms of educating the children in the United States. It is vital that the current system be understood and changes made in order to assure the growth of both students and the country alike. It has been noted by professionals from all fields that the current state of education in this country is poor and, if the United States expects to keep up with the rest of the world and remain competitive, it must address these issues. Michael Katz, who is a renown educational historian, tells in his book, Reconstructing American Education, the birth of the educational system in the United States (Katz, 1989). "American public education assumed its unique form partly because of the coincidence of its birth with the origins of this system of democratic politics" (Katz, 1989). He argues that "A close temporal connection existed between social development and the creation of public educational systems" (Katz, 1989). But, what is important to note in his book is not simply where American Education has been, but, more importantly, where it is going (Katz, 1989). It is the argument of Katz that "the reconstruction of Americas educational past can be used as a framework for thinking about current reform" (Katz, 1989). Another leading person in terms of predicting the future is Joseph Coates, author of 2025: Scenarios of US and Global Society Reshaped by Science and Technology (Coates, 1996). Coates argues that change is indeed on the horizon in terms of education and that this change is inevitable and necessary (Coates, 1996).
