The nuclear family comprises one of the most basic units of social interaction. This interaction, however, is not always a healthy interaction. Such as the case in situations of family violence. Domestic violence is one of the most disturbing social issues of our time. Indeed, it is one of the more unfortunate aspects of our increasingly complex urban society. Regardless of the reasons, however, domestic violence is an inexcusable situation. Most often the targets of domestic violence are women and children. The purpose of this paper is to explore a family in which such violence occurs, to present a genogram of that family, to describe the system issues which are at play, explain these interactions and issues under Salvador Minuchins theory of the structured family (first formulated in the 1960s), and formulate an approach for dealing with this family from a therapeutic approach. Minuchins theory is instructive in a number of regards. Clements (1982, 325) reports: "The family structure model conceives of the family as an open social system in transformation, characterized by the organization of hierarchical positions and recurring transaction patterns between and among these positions". The family which will be explored in this paper is the Suarez family. The Suarez family consists of a single mother and four children, three boys and one girls.
