itself. This quest led to a series of informal rules and regulations and ultimately to written law itself. The Magna Carta is perhaps the most interesting of the ancient documents that arose. It has served as the basis for a long progression of other documents that make us who we are today. The Magna Carta is one of the most important legal documents in history. First issued in 1215 in England, one of its primary features it its establishment of due process (Clifford, 2003). The Magna Carta is not necessarily reflective of general principles of law, however, but rather of the types of grievances which had plagued the society for generations (The British Library Board, 1995). A focus is particularly evident on the issues of land rights and with managing the use of power held by the royal officials and indeed of the King himself (The British Library Board, 1995). The Magna Carta was intended to protect the most basic rights of those that fell under the reign of the king (The British Library Board, 1995). The document has had a tremendous influence throughout its history and has played a part in shaping numerous other documents relating to constitutional law. One of the documents that the Magna Carta greatly influenced, of course, was ultimately the US Constitution itself. That influence can be traced through a series of other documents leading up to the Constitution. The Pilgrims who settled the Plymouth Colony, for example, constructed the Mayflower Compact, for example, in 1620 as a means of establishing their own rights and expectations in their new world.
