power to be ethical or unethical lies within every individual. The actual choice belongs to that individual and nobody else. But if the debate is take a step further, the individuals determination to do the right thing also extends to what he or she promotes or encourages in the world. That includes ones life work, personal action, and individual choices. A new product is produced that has been proven to be the best of its kind. It is an example of manufacturing initiative and creativity. It offers the opportunity for significant profit. The "minor" problem is that it is undeniably an instrument of war, a killing machine, a product with the entire purpose of killing or maiming human beings. Certain basic facts about landmines and the landmines industry should be understood. Over 400 million anti-personnel landmines have been laid since 1942, of which 110 million in about 70 countries remain to be cleared (Hogendoorn 14). Hogendoorn gives even mores specific figures by noting that: "Every 22 minutes someone is injured, maimed or killed in a landmine incident ... Most of the victims are civilians, often women and children, and nearly all these incidents occur after fighting has ended in the area where the mines were laid" (14). Only the most determined and profit-oriented marketer or the one with no sense of moral scruples could enthusiastically support and promote a marketing campaign for such a product.
